2023 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 41 BY SENATOR SMITH A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend and congratulate Hahnville High School teacher Brittany Bonnaffons upon being named the 2023 Louisiana Teacher of the Year. WHEREAS, excellence in teaching is the result of commitment, dedication, inspiration, patience, creativity, hard work, and the highest order of professional integrity; and WHEREAS, research clearly demonstrates that teachers are paramount to student achievement and it has been estimated that a teacher has two to three times the impact of any other school factor; and WHEREAS, Brittany Bonnaffons is now serving in her twelfth year as an educator, teaching algebra at Hahnville High School, where she also serves as head track coach; and WHEREAS, she graduated from Louisiana Scholars' College at Northwestern State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration; and WHEREAS, Ms. Bonnaffons went on to earn a Master of Science in business administration from Louisiana State University, and a Master of Science in exercise science from the University of Louisiana Monroe, as well as a Master of Arts in teaching from Northwestern University; and WHEREAS, historically, the Intensive Algebra students entering her class have scored unsatisfactorily on their LEAP tests; however, under her direction, sixty-three percent of Ms. Bonnaffons' students who were not on track to pass the LEAP and ninety-three percent of her remaining learners passed the Algebra 1 LEAP 2025; and WHEREAS, Ms. Bonnaffons' mission is to connect students to someone who has the answers they need; and WHEREAS, she believes math gives students perseverance, reasoning, and problem-solving skills; and WHEREAS, Ms. Bonnaffons works to connect students both inside and outside the classroom walls to others who are successful to help students become the best versions of themselves; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 41 ENROLLED WHEREAS, in 2018, Ms. Bonnaffons became the head coach for the track team and, since that time, the team has captured four district championship team titles, two regional runner-up team titles, more than fifty individual district medals, more than thirty individual regional medals, and more than ten state medals; and WHEREAS, she collaborates with the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference track and field championship to give student athletes an awareness of collegiate opportunities; and WHEREAS, Ms. Bonnaffons has said that her favorite things about coaching and teaching are getting to see students really come alive inside and outside of the classroom and that her goal is to bring out the best in students; and WHEREAS, the Teacher of the Year program is a creation of the partnership between the Dream Teachers, the Louisiana Association of Principals, and the Louisiana Department of Education, which annually recognizes and celebrates the state's most exceptional educators as a means to publicly honor and recognize the critical role of instructional excellence in ensuring student success in school and in life; and WHEREAS, Brittany Bonnaffons has been named the 2023 Louisiana Teacher of the Year and is held in the highest regard by her students, her colleagues, and her community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Hahnville High School teacher, Brittany Bonnaffons upon being named the 2023 Louisiana Teacher of the Year, does hereby recognize the tremendous pride that this award bestows on Hahnville High School and the St. Charles Parish public school system, and does hereby thank Ms. Bonnaffons for her commitment of energy and talent to Louisiana's children.
