| 31 | 31 | | 1 SECTION 1. Section 129C of chapter 140 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2020 |

| 32 | 32 | | 2Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting after the third paragraph the following |

| 34 | 34 | | 4 Whoever fails to report the loss or theft of a firearm, rifle, shotgun or machine gun that is |

| 35 | 35 | | 5later used in the commission of a crime shall be civilly liable for any damages resulting from that |

| 36 | 36 | | 6crime. The liability imposed under this paragraph shall not apply if the owner reports the loss or |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | 7theft of such firearm, rifle, shotgun or machine gun to the commissioner of the department of |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | 8criminal justice information services and the licensing authority in the city or town where the |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | 9owner resides within 24 hours of the owner’s knowledge of such loss or theft. |
