State Board of Dental Examiners – University of Maryland School of Dentistry 2
Faculty – Qualifying for Examination 3
FOR the purpose of altering the circumstances under which a dentist who is a faculty 4
member at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and trained at a foreign 5
dental school must be qualified by the State Board of Dental Examiners to take an 6
examination offered by the American Board of Dental Examiners, Inc., or its 7
successor organization; and generally relating to the qualifying of faculty members 8
at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry by the State Board of Dental 9
Examiners for examination. 10

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, 16
That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 17

(a) A dentist who is a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of 2
Dentistry and was trained at a foreign dental school shall be qualified by the Board to take 3
an examination offered by ADEX, as defined in § 4–306 of this subtitle, if the applicant: 4
(1) (I) 1. [Completes training in a dental specialty recognized by 5
the Board; AND 6
(2) 2. Is board certified in a dental specialty recognized by the 7
Board; OR 8
(3)] (II) IS A GENERAL DENTIST WHO: 9
1. HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMP LETED: 10
A. A GENERAL DENTAL PRACT ICE RESIDENCY; OR 11
B. ADVANCED EDUCATION IN A GENERAL DENTISTRY 12
PROGRAM; OR 13
2. IS BOARD CERTIFIED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF 14
GENERAL DENTISTRY; 15
(2) At the time the application is made, is a full–time faculty member at 16
the University of Maryland School of Dentistry who has completed at least 7 consecutive 17
years as a full–time faculty member; and 18
[(4)] (2) (3) Submits to the Board a written letter of support from the 19
University of Maryland School of Dentistry stating that the school supports the applicant 20
to take the ADEX examination. 21
(b) If the dentist receives a passing score on the ADEX examination, the dentist 22
may apply for a general license to practice dentistry. 23
(c) A dentist who applied for a general license to practice dentistry under 24
subsection (b) of this section and was issued a general license shall surrender the license if 25
the dentist violates any provision of this title or any regulation adopted by the Board. 26
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect 27
October 1, 2023. 28
