1.1 A bill for an act
1.2 relating to transportation; establishing a "Share the Road" special license plate;
1.3 proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 168.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
1.5 Section 1. [168.1289] "SHARE THE ROAD" SPECIAL PLATES.
1.6 Subdivision 1.Issuance of plates.The commissioner must issue "Share the Road"
1.7special plates or a single motorcycle plate to an applicant who:
1.8 (1) is a registered owner of a passenger automobile, noncommercial one-ton pickup
1.9truck, motorcycle, or recreational motor vehicle;
1.10 (2) pays a fee in the amount specified for special plates under section 168.12, subdivision
1.115, for each set of plates, along with any other fees required by this chapter;
1.12 (3) pays the registration tax required under section 168.013;
1.13 (4) contributes a minimum of $40 annually to the active transportation account under
1.14section 174.38; and
1.15 (5) complies with this chapter and rules governing registration of motor vehicles and
1.16licensing of drivers.
1.17 Subd. 2.Design.The representatives of the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota must design
1.18the special plate in consultation with the commissioner. The special plate must contain the
1.19inscription "Share the Road" between the bolt holes on the bottom of the plate with a design
1.20area on the left side of the plate, subject to the approval of the commissioner.

2.5 (2) registered to the same individual to whom the special plates were originally issued.
2.6 Subd. 4.Exemption.Special plates issued under this section are not subject to section
2.7168.1293, subdivision 2.
2.8 Subd. 5.Contributions; account.Contributions collected under subdivision 1, clause
2.9(4), must be deposited in the active transportation account in the special revenue fund under
2.10section 174.38, subdivision 3, paragraph (a).
2.11 EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective January 1, 2026, for "Share the Road"
2.12special plates issued on or after that date.
