66 1.6BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:​
77 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.27, subdivision 2, is amended to read:​
88 1.8 Subd. 2.Sentence.(a) Whoever violates subdivision 1 may be sentenced as follows:​
99 1.9 (1) to imprisonment for not more than 90 days or to payment of a fine of not more than​
1010 1.10$1,000, or both if neither the pecuniary gain received by the violator nor the loss suffered​
1111 1.11by the person threatened or another as a result of the threat exceeds $300, or the benefits​
1212 1.12received or harm sustained are not susceptible of pecuniary measurement; or​
1313 1.13 (2) to imprisonment for not more than five years or to payment of a fine of not more​
1414 1.14than $10,000, or both, if such pecuniary gain or loss is more than $300 but less than $2,500;​
1515 1.15or​
1616 1.16 (3) to imprisonment for not more than ten years or to payment of a fine of not more than​
1717 1.17$20,000, or both, if such pecuniary gain or loss is $2,500, or more.​
1818 1.18 (b) A person who violates subdivision 1, clause (6), may be sentenced as provided in​
1919 1.19paragraph (a). If the violation is the proximate cause of the victim suffering great bodily​
2020 1.20harm or death, the person is guilty of a felony and may be sentenced to imprisonment for​
2121 1.21not more than 15 years, or to payment of a fine of not more than $30,000, or both.​

3333 2.4 The commissioner of public safety, in consultation with the commissioner of education,​
3434 2.5shall conduct a public awareness campaign to educate the public and in particular students​
3535 2.6in elementary, middle, and secondary schools of the change in law under section 1. This​
3636 2.7campaign must be conducted by September 15, 2025, and reconducted on a biennial basis.​
