1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to public safety; providing enhanced criminal penalty for certain violations 1.3 of coercion crime that proximately cause great bodily harm or death of victim; 1.4 providing for public awareness campaign; amending Minnesota Statutes 2024, 1.5 section 609.27, subdivision 2. 1.6BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.27, subdivision 2, is amended to read: 1.8 Subd. 2.Sentence.(a) Whoever violates subdivision 1 may be sentenced as follows: 1.9 (1) to imprisonment for not more than 90 days or to payment of a fine of not more than 1.10$1,000, or both if neither the pecuniary gain received by the violator nor the loss suffered 1.11by the person threatened or another as a result of the threat exceeds $300, or the benefits 1.12received or harm sustained are not susceptible of pecuniary measurement; or 1.13 (2) to imprisonment for not more than five years or to payment of a fine of not more 1.14than $10,000, or both, if such pecuniary gain or loss is more than $300 but less than $2,500; 1.15or 1.16 (3) to imprisonment for not more than ten years or to payment of a fine of not more than 1.17$20,000, or both, if such pecuniary gain or loss is $2,500, or more. 1.18 (b) A person who violates subdivision 1, clause (6), may be sentenced as provided in 1.19paragraph (a). PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN. 2.4 The commissioner of public safety, in consultation with the commissioner of education, 2.5shall conduct a public awareness campaign to educate the public and in particular students 2.6in elementary, middle, and secondary schools of the change in law under section 1.
