Thisbillmodifiesthedefinitionof"schoolbus"toincludethe
requirementthatthebusmustbedesignedtocarrymorethan10
people.Schooldistrictsareauthorizedtouseothermotor
vehiclesforthepurposeoftransportingschoolchildren. The
StateBoardofEducationmayadoptrulesandregulationsgoverning
theuseoftheothermotorvehicles,butnotvehiclesoperating
undertheauthorityoftheDepartmentofRevenue'sTransportation
NetworkProvision.
PROPONENTS: Supporterssaythatthisbillwillopenflexibility
forschoolstoprovidetransportation inamoreeconomicalway.
Thealternativetransportation opportunitieswillallowforan
increasedbenefittofosterchildren,homelessstudents,students
workingatoff-siteworkbasedlearningopportunities, andfor
districtsthatpotentiallyhavestudentslivinginnon-resident
locationsthatmightnothaveadedicatedtraditionalbusroute.
