ThefollowingisasummaryoftheHouseCommitteeSubstituteforHB
2699.
Thisbillrequireslawenforcementtoimmediatelyenterareportof
acomplaintofamissingpersonintotheNationalMissingand
UnidentifiedPersonsSystem(NamUs). Thebillalsorequiresthe
lawenforcementagencyreceivingthecomplaintofamissingperson
toattempttolocatecurrentphotosofthemissingpersonandto
scanthephotosandenterthemintoMULES,NCIC,andNamUSassoon
aspracticableafterreceivingthecomplaint.
Thefollowingisasummaryofthepublictestimonyfromthe
committeehearing. Thetestimonywasbasedontheintroduced
versionofthebill.
PROPONENTS: Supporterssaythat600,000missingpersoncasesare
openedintheUSeveryyear.Currently,lawenforcementofficers
arerequiredtosubmitmissingpersons’casestocertainsystems
butnowtheywillhavetoreporttoNamUs(foundedinearly2000s
byDOJ)inaddition. Theywillalsohavetosecureaphotoofthe
missingpersonwithin10days.
