1514 AN ACT TO ESTABLISH THE SECOND WEEK IN NOVEMBER AS SUDEP AWARENESS 2
1615 WEEK IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA AND TO RECOMMEND AWARENESS 3
1716 TRAINING FOR SCHOOL PERSONNEL RESPONSIBLE FOR STUDENTS WITH 4
1817 EPILEPSY OR OTHERWISE PREDISPOSED TO SEIZURES. 5
1918 Whereas, "SUDEP" is the sudden, unexpected death of a person with epilepsy who 6
2019 was otherwise considered healthy; and 7
2120 Whereas, each year, more than one out of 1,000 people with epilepsy die from 8
2221 SUDEP; and 9
2322 Whereas, uncontrolled seizures increase the risk of SUDEP to more than one out of 10
2423 150 people; and 11
2524 Whereas, during National Epilepsy Awareness Month, it is important to also bring 12
2625 awareness of SUDEP; Now, therefore, 13
2726 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 14
2827 SECTION 1. Chapter 103 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new 15
2928 section to read: 16
3029 "§ 103-19. SUDEP Awareness Week. 17
3130 The week beginning on the second Sunday in November of each year is designated as Sudden 18
3231 Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) Awareness Week in North Carolina." 19
3332 SECTION 2. Article 25A of Chapter 115C of the General Statutes is amended by 20
3433 adding a new section to read: 21
3534 "§ 115C-375.7. Seizure awareness training for school personnel. 22
3635 (a) This section shall be known and may be cited as the "Shannon Leigh Adcock, Steven 23
3736 Anthony Christos, and Samantha Davis Memorial Act." 24
3837 (b) It is the goal of the General Assembly to encourage local boards of education to 25
3938 develop and provide seizure awareness training for all teachers and other school personnel who 26
4039 may be responsible for students with epilepsy or students that are otherwise predisposed to 27
4140 seizures." 28
4241 SECTION 3. This act is effective when it becomes law. 29
