1414 AN ACT TO PROHIBIT LEAVING A FIREARM IN AN UNATTENDED MOTOR VEHICLE 2

1717 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 5
1818 SECTION 1. Article 35 of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes is amended by adding 6
1919 a new section to read: 7
2020 "ยง 14-269.9. Firearms in unattended motor vehicles. 8
2121 (a) Definition. โ€“ For purposes of this section, the term "firearm" is as defined in 9
2222 G.S. 14-408.1. 10
2323 (b) Prohibition. โ€“ It is unlawful to leave a firearm in an unattended motor vehicle unless 11
2424 the vehicle is locked and the firearm is either (i) secured with a trigger lock or other safety device 12
2525 designed to prevent an unauthorized user from operating the firearm or (ii) in a locked container. 13
2626 (c) Penalty. โ€“ Any person who violates subsection (b) of this section is guilty of a Class 14
2727 2 misdemeanor." 15
2828 SECTION 2. This act becomes effective December 1, 2025, and applies to offenses 16
2929 committed on or after that date. 17
