A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1 
AN ACT TO PROHIBIT LEAVING A FIREARM IN AN UNATTENDED MOTOR VEHICLE 2 
UNLESS THE VEHICLE I S LOCKED AND THE FIR EARM IS SECURED OR 3 
OTHERWISE SAFELY STORED. 4 
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 5 
SECTION 1. Article 35 of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes is amended by adding 6 
a new section to read: 7 
"ยง 14-269.9.  Firearms in unattended motor vehicles. 8 
(a) Definition. โ€“ For purposes of this section, the term "firearm" is as defined in 9 
G.S. 14-408.1. 10 
(b) Prohibition. โ€“ It is unlawful to leave a firearm in an unattended motor vehicle unless 11 
the vehicle is locked and the firearm is either (i) secured with a trigger lock or other safety device 12 
designed to prevent an unauthorized user from operating the firearm or (ii) in a locked container. 13 
(c) Penalty. โ€“ Any person who violates subsection (b) of this section is guilty of a Class 14 
2 misdemeanor." 15 
SECTION 2. This act becomes effective December 1, 2025, and applies to offenses 16 
committed on or after that date. 17
