A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1 
AN ACT TO REQUIRE PUBLIC SCHOOL UNITS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT 2 
DIABETES TO PARENTS AND LEGAL GUARDIANS. 3 
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 4 
SECTION 1. G.S. 115C-375.3 reads as rewritten: 5 
"ยง 115C-375.3.  Guidelines to support and assist students with diabetes. 6 
(a) Local boards of education and boards of directors of charter schools Governing bodies 7 
of public school units shall ensure that the guidelines adopted by the State Board of Education 8 
under G.S. 115C-12(31) are implemented in schools in which students with diabetes are enrolled. 9 
In particular, the boards shall require the implementation of the procedures set forth in those 10 
guidelines for the development and implementation of individual diabetes care plans. The boards 11 
also shall make available necessary information and staff development to teachers and school 12 
personnel in order to appropriately support and assist students with diabetes in accordance with 13 
their individual diabetes care plans. 14 
(b) Governing bodies of public school units shall ensure that each school provides parents 15 
and legal guardians with information about type 1 and type 2 diabetes at the beginning of every 16 
school year. This information shall include all of the following: 17 
(1) A description of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 18 
(2) A description of the risk factors and warning signs associated with type 1 and 19 
type 2 diabetes. 20 
(3) A recommendation that if a student is displaying warning signs associated 21 
with diabetes, the parent or guardian of the student consult with the primary 22 
care provider of the student to determine if immediate screening for diabetes 23 
is appropriate. 24 
(4) A description of the screening process for and stages of diabetes. 25 
(5) A recommendation that if a student receives a diabetes diagnosis, the parent 26 
or guardian of the student consult with the primary care provider of the student 27 
to develop an appropriate treatment plan. 28 
(6) Notification that the school is required to assist students with diabetes in 29 
accordance with the rules adopted by the State Board of Education pursuant 30 
to G.S. 115C-12(31)." 31 
SECTION 2. There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Department of 32 
Public Instruction the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) in nonrecurring funds for the 33  General Assembly Of North Carolina 	Session 2025

2025-2026 fiscal year to assist the Department in developing and distributing guidance to public 1 
school units on implementing the provisions of this act. 2 
SECTION 3. This act becomes effective July 1, 2025, and applies beginning with 3 
the 2025-2026 school year. 4
