 Senate Resolution No. 55 BY: Senator WALCZYK COMMEMORATING the 135th Anniversary of the City of Gloversville, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the City of Gloversville in Fulton County, New York; and WHEREAS, The land where current day Gloversville is located was settled as early as 1752, with the plentiful hemlock forests providing necessary resources for tanning or making leather, as well as creating leather and gloves; and WHEREAS, In 1828, the community officially became known as Gloversville; it was previously referred to as "Stump City" due to the number of stumps in the city leftover from hemlock harvesting; and WHEREAS, From 1890 to 1950, 90% of all gloves in USA were made in Gloversville; and WHEREAS, The city was able to thrive due to the number of ancillary businesses and industries which supported the glove making industry; such businesses included sewing machine repairers, box makers, thread dealers, and others; and WHEREAS, Gloversville also had an electric interurban line which was very advanced, connecting it to Johnstown and Fonda until 1936, contributing to the growth of the city and population; and WHEREAS, Gloversville was formally incorporated as a village in 1853, then a city in 1890; and WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth and change, the City of Gloversville continues its commitment to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential services; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the City of Gloversville, New York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the City of Gloversville.
