Senate Resolution No. 59 BY: Senator WALCZYK COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Speculator, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Speculator in Hamilton County, New York; and WHEREAS, The area which the Village of Speculator currently occupies is believed to have once been hunting and fishing grounds for Algonquin and Mohawk tribes in the pre-colonial era; and WHEREAS, In 1864, Joel Newton built a small store and hotel in the center of town and secured a post office with the name "Newton's Corners"; shortly after, in 1896, the name was changed to Speculator, derived from a mountain which one could see across Lake Pleasant; and WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator began to blossom, igniting a booming tourist industry, which fostered the development of better facilities and infrastructure, and as a result, a government was formed soon thereafter; and WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator was officially formed in 1925 when it was approved by voters; and WHEREAS, Speculator became home to many cottages and hunting shanties during the Victorian age of tourism, along with other camps; the village is known colloquially as "All Season Vacationland" for the number of activities to do throughout all four seasons; and WHEREAS, The Village of Speculator is surrounded by and renowned for its natural beauty, with Speculator Mountain to the south and Lake Pleasant and Sacandaga Lake to the west; the village even features a unique geographic exclave to the north of its main territory; and WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth and change, the Village of Speculator continues its commitment to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institutional, and educational climate, and providing all essential services; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Speculator, New York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Village of Speculator.
