Senate Resolution No. 65 BY: Senator WALCZYK COMMEMORATING the 135th Anniversary of the Village of Middleville, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the Village of Middleville in Herkimer County, New York; and WHEREAS, The area which hosts the modern-day Village of Middleville was first settled in 1806, due to the demand for waterpower; and WHEREAS, A local named Sheffield Kenyon purchased this land and soon after, two public houses and blacksmiths were established; and WHEREAS, By 1814, the community had a mill, the Herkimer Manufacturing Company erected a large stone building for manufacturing wool, cotton, flax, and iron products, and resident John Wood had a tannery; and WHEREAS, Railroad service was obtained in 1880, and due to increasing demands, the village was incorporated in 1890, with water and main lines were established shortly thereafter; and WHEREAS, As a result of the railroad, developing infrastructure, and proximity to Utica and the Adirondack mountains, Middleville quickly became a vibrant community with an active fire department, library, and churches; and WHEREAS, Packed full of history, Middleville is home to two places on the National Register of Historic Places: Lalino Stone Arch Bridge and the Route 29 Stone Arch Bridge; and WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth and change, the Village of Middleville continues its commitment to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institutional, and educational climate, and providing all essential services; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the Village of Middleville, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Village of Middleville.
