 Senate Resolution No. 66 BY: Senator WALCZYK COMMEMORATING the 195th Anniversary of the Town of West Turin, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of West Turin, New York; and WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin was formed from part of Turin on March 25, 1830, and was subsequently reduced in size by the formation of newer towns: Montague (1850) and Osceola (1844); and WHEREAS, Located in what is now Lewis County, settlement of West Turin began as early as 1796 with Mr. John Ives and his family; and WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin was known as a center of trade during the 1880s, but soon declined due to main highways and railroads bypassing it; farming is still big in the community, but is more consolidated with larger farms; and WHEREAS, The Town of West Turin is home to Constable Hall, which inspired "Twas the Night Before Christmas," and Gould Paper Company, which began in 1892; and WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of West Turin continues to provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and WHEREAS, Today, the residents of the Town of West Turin have a bright outlook for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in which to live and raise a family; and WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of West Turin rich history and enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its 195th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of West Turin, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Town of West Turin.
