 Senate Resolution No. 138 BY: Senator ORTT MOURNING the death of Martin R. Horanburg Sr., distinguished citizen, fire chief, and devoted member of his community WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. of Newfane, New York, died on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the age of 87; he was the son of the late William and Ruby Horanburg; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. distinguished himself in his profession and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of his community; and WHEREAS, After working for Harrison Radiators and Electronic Data Systems for many years, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. retired in 1995, and began dedicating much of his time to volunteerism in his community of Newfane; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. was a member of Miller Hose Fire Company for 58 years, serving as fire chief from 1976-1979; he was awarded the FASNY Fire Service Community Achievement Award in 2014; and WHEREAS, Selfless in all his acts, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. served as a Newfane Lions Club member for 47 years, was Easter egg chairman, and received two of the highest awards from the Melvin Jones Fellow and the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. was also involved in youth sports and sports boosters in which he received numerous awards; he was the PA announcer for boys' and girls' basketball, and for junior varsity and varsity football, earning himself the designation as "The Voice of the Panthers" since 1991; and WHEREAS, This dedicated and revered community man also volunteered much of his time with the Olcott Beach Carousel Park, Newfane Historical Society, the Sesquicentennial committee, and numerous other organizations; and WHEREAS, In his free time, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. loved spending time with his family, camping, traveling, playing softball on Newfane and Lockport teams, snowmobiling, and singing; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr.'s commitment to excellence and spirit of humanity carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charitable and civic endeavors; and WHEREAS, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Brenda; children, Martin Jr. (Annie), Michelle, Gregory (Christi), and Michael; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and many close friends; he is predeceased by his daughter, Anne (Allen Sengstock); and WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of compassion, Martin R. Horanburg Sr. leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to mourn the death of Martin R. Horanburg Sr., and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Martin R. Horanburg Sr.
