AS INTRODUCED 
 
An Act relating to public health; establishing 
requirements under the Maternal Mortality Review Act; 
providing requirements for reportin g autopsies; 
providing for codification; and providing an 
effective date. 
 
 
 
 
 
BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA: 
SECTION 1.     NEW LAW     A new section of law to be codified 
in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 1-242.5 of Title 63, unless 
there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows: 
A.  For the purposes of the Maternal Mortality Review Comm ittee, 
hospitals and licensed birth centers must make a reasonable and 
good-faith effort to report all death s that occur during pregnanc y 
or within one (1) year of termination of pregnancy to the local 
coroner or medical examiner for consideration of an au topsy. 
B.  These deaths must be reported within seventy-two (72) hours 
after the death occurs.

C.  Medical examiners to whom the death w as reported shall 
conduct a death investiga tion, with autopsy strongly recommended but 
not required. 
D.  Autopsies must follow the guidelines for performance of an 
autopsy as regulated by the State Department of Health. 
SECTION 2.  This act shall becom e effective November 1, 2023.
