RELATING TO BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONS -- ATHLETIC TRAINERS

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: 
SECTION 1. Section 5-60-10 of the General Laws in Chapter 5-60 entitled "Athletic 1 
Trainers" is hereby amended to read as follows: 2 
5-60-10. Qualifications of athletic trainers. 3 
(a) An applicant for an athletic trainer license must possess one of the following 4 
qualifications: 5 
(1) Give proof of graduation from an accredited college or university and have met the 6 
following minimum athletic-training-curriculum requirements established by the board, by 7 
completing the following specific course requirements: 8 
(i) Human anatomy; 9 
(ii) Human physiology; 10 
(iii) Physiology of exercise; 11 
(iv) Applied anatomy and kinesiology; 12 
(v) Psychology (2 courses); 13 
(vi) First aid and CPR; 14 
(vii) Nutrition; 15 
(viii) Remedial exercise; 16 
(ix) Personal, community, and school health; 17 
(x) Techniques of athletic training; 18 
(xi) Advanced techniques of athletic training; and 19

(xii) Clinical experience in accordance with national standards and as approved by the 1 
director. 2 
(2) Show proof acceptable to the board of education and experience of equal caliber to that 3 
specified in subsection (a)(1). 4 
(3) Have passed the required examination approved by the department. 5 
(b) On and after January 1, 2004, an applicant for initial licensure shall be required to 6 
demonstrate: 7 
(1) Proof of graduation from an accredited college or university and shall have met 8 
minimum athletic training requirements as established by department regulation; and 9 
(2) Proof of having passed the required examination, approved by the department, and shall 10 
have been certified by the national certifying body recognized by the National Athletic Trainers 11 
Association (NATA). 12 
(c) On and after January 1, 2024, as a condition for issuance or maintaining a license issued 13 
pursuant to § 5-60-9, an athletic trainer shall successfully complete training and be issued a 14 
certificate pursuant to the provisions of § 23-6.4-6. 15 
SECTION 2. Chapter 5-60 of the General Laws entitled "Athletic Trainers" is hereby 16 
amended by adding thereto the following section: 17 
5-60-10.1. Trained and equipped with epi-pen requirement.     18 
On and after January 1, 2024, every athletic trainer licensed pursuant to § 5-60-9 shall be 19 
trained and equipped with an epinephrine auto-injector while performing the duties of an athletic 20 
trainer. 21 
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon passage. 22

EXPLANATION 
BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONS -- ATHLETIC TRAINERS

This act would require athletic trainers to be trained in the use of epi-pens. On January 1, 1 
2024, athletic trainers would be required to be equipped with an epi-pen while performing duties 2 
of an athletic trainer. 3 
This act would take effect upon passage. 4
