| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 16-2 of the General Laws entitled "School Committees and 1 |

| 24 | 24 | | Superintendents [See Title 16 Chapter 97 — The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby 2 |

| 25 | 25 | | amended by adding thereto the following section: 3 |

| 26 | 26 | | 16-2-37. Excused absences to include participation in agricultural fairs. 4 |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | When a school committee, by its policies, provides for excused absences from attendance 5 |

| 28 | 28 | | in school, for participation in a sport or any other extracurricular activity, that policy shall be 6 |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | amended and deemed to also include an excused absence from attendance in school for attending 7 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | or participating in agricultural fairs as listed or defined by the department of environmental 8 |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | management. The department of environmental management shall work in consultation with the 9 |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | department of elementary and secondary education to define what qualifies as an agricultural fair 10 |

| 33 | 33 | | for purposes of this section. 11 |
