Impact

One of the primary effects of SB 1749 is the consolidation of state laws, making them easier to navigate for legal professionals, lawmakers, and the public. By updating the Tennessee Code to reflect recent legislative changes, the bill ensures that the state’s body of law is current and comprehensive. The extensive nature of the bill, with two volumes totaling over 1,765 pages, underscores the volume of legislation that the General Assembly routinely enacts and the importance of keeping the legal code updated in a systematic manner.

Summary

Senate Bill 1749 aims to revise and codify the general and public statutes of the State of Tennessee for the year 2024. This bill serves as an annual codification measure, which involves incorporating the various general acts passed by the General Assembly into the Tennessee Code Annotated. It does not introduce any substantive changes to existing laws but rather updates and integrates recent laws into the official compilation of state statutes. The codification process is integral to maintaining an accurate and accessible legislative framework for Tennessee's legal code.

Sentiment

The sentiment surrounding SB 1749 appears to be neutral to positive, as such codification bills are typically viewed as necessary housekeeping measures within legislative processes. While there may not be significant public debate on the specifics of this bill, the overall perception is that codification helps enhance legal clarity and efficiency. Lawmakers often support these bills as they reflect their commitment to ensuring that laws are systematically documented and accessible.

Contention

Given that SB 1749 is a routine codification bill, notable points of contention are limited. The bill mainly serves to integrate existing public acts into the larger body of law without introducing controversial elements or dramatic legislative changes. However, it could face minor scrutiny regarding how effectively it captures all relevant changes in legislation, given its sheer size and the complexity of the laws being codified. Overall, the nature of this bill does not typically incite the kind of debate seen with more substantive legislative proposals.
