1212 A RESOLUTION to recognize and commend the 2024 Do the
1313 Write Thing National Challenge Ambassadors,
1414 Charlotte Mount, Josiah Young, Adedamola
1515 Adeyemo, Bobby Calvin III, Amara-Asa
1616 Nwachukwu, and Tiernan Carney.

1818 WHEREAS, it is most fitting that the members of this General Assembly recognize those
1919 precocious youth who excel in the classroom and beyond and bring great pride to this State;
2020 and
2121 WHEREAS, such individuals are Charlotte Mount, Josiah Young, Adedamola Adeyemo,
2222 and Bobby Calvin III from the Western Grand Division and Amara-Asa Nwachukwu and Tiernan
2323 Carney from the Eastern Grand Division; and
2424 WHEREAS, these six middle school students were selected as National Ambassadors
2525 for the Do the Write Thing Recognition Week, which took place July 20-25, 2024, in
2626 Washington, D.C.; and
2727 WHEREAS, an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence, the Do the Write
2828 Thing (DtWT) Challenge is a writing program for middle school students that positions them as
2929 community catalysts as they examine the root causes and effects of youth violence; and
3030 WHEREAS, the DtWT Challenge gives students an opportunity to examine the impact of
3131 youth violence on their lives in classroom discussions and in written form by communicating
3232 what they think should be done to change the culture of violence; and
3333 WHEREAS, since the program's inception, more than 2.5 million students have
3434 participated, with upward of 85,000 written submissions per year; the DtWT Challenge has been
3535 implemented in twenty-six participating communities across the nation, including
3636 Jackson/Madison County, Memphis/Shelby County, and Knoxville/Knox County; and

4141 WHEREAS, each year, educators encourage middle school students to answer three
4242 questions involving youth violence, including its causes, how youth violence has affected a
4343 student's life, and ways in which a student might help reduce youth violence; after evaluation,
4444 the girl and boy who submit the most responsive writings from their community are selected to
4545 serve as DtWT Challenge National Ambassadors; and
4646 WHEREAS, in 2024, Charlotte Mount from North East Middle School, Josiah Young
4747 from West Bemis Middle School, Adedamola Adeyemo from Cordova Middle School, Bobby
4848 Calvin III from John P. Freeman Optional School, Amara-Asa Nwachukwu from Emerald
4949 Academy, and Tiernan Carney from Sacred Heart Cathedral School ably represented the
5050 Volunteer State; and
5151 WHEREAS, while visiting our nation's capital, the National Ambassadors participated in
5252 an awards dinner at the Kuwait Ambassador's residence and toured the Library of Congress; a
5353 leather-bound volume of their writings was published and placed in the Library of Congress; and
5454 a culminating banquet for the students was held at the National Press Club; and
5555 WHEREAS, Charlotte Mount, Josiah Young, Adedamola Adeyemo, Bobby Calvin III,
5656 Amara-Asa Nwachukwu, and Tiernan Carney are some of the most exceptional youth in our
5757 State, and their compassionate commitment to discourse around violence and its effects on
5858 young people is most worthy of our commendation; now, therefore,
5959 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH
6060 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE HOUSE OF
6161 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that we recognize and commend Charlotte Mount,
6262 Josiah Young, Adedamola Adeyemo, Bobby Calvin III, Amara-Asa Nwachukwu, and Tiernan
6363 Carney, National Ambassadors who represented Tennessee during the 2024 Do the Write
6464 Thing Challenge, extending our best wishes for their continued success.
