15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Women's Day on the Hill is a time to honor the achievements of those |

16 | 16 | | Tennessee women who have paved the way for every person to have the opportunity to pursue |

17 | 17 | | the American dream; and |

18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, the Volunteer State is proud to be the home of the awe-inspiring Lisa |
---|
19 | 19 | | Sherman Luna, an immigrant to Nashville from Guatemala, who has dedicated her life to |

20 | 20 | | helping immigrants and refugees safely and securely live in the United States, apprising them of |
---|
21 | 21 | | their rights and reminding them of their dignity; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Luna is the first Latina executive director of the Tennessee Immigrant |
---|
23 | 23 | | and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) and its sister organization, TIRRC Votes, and her |
---|
24 | 24 | | incomparable captaincy chartered a course for the organization through the difficulties of |
---|
25 | 25 | | COVID-19, settled TIRRC into its new headquarters, and multiplied its staff and programs to |
---|
26 | 26 | | lead robust statewide organizing efforts; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, her expansive positive influence and evident leadership skills can also be |
---|
28 | 28 | | found on the executive committee of the National Partnership for New Americans, the board of |
---|
29 | 29 | | the National Immigration Law Center's Immigrant Justice Fund, and the steering committee for |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Fair Immigration Reform Movement; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, prior to leading TIRRC, Ms. Luna worked in the international human rights |
---|
32 | 32 | | field in New York, London, and Senegal, offering her a global perspective that accentuates and |
---|
33 | 33 | | informs her work here in the United States; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Luna's skills have only been further enhanced and enriched by her |

35 | 35 | | studies at King's College London, where she earned a master's degree in conflict, security, and |
