<BillNo> <Sponsor> SENATE RESOLUTION 24 By Lamar SR0024 003942 - 1 - A RESOLUTION to honor Lisa Sherman Luna in celebration of Women's Day on the Hill. WHEREAS, Women's Day on the Hill is a time to honor the achievements of those Tennessee women who have paved the way for every person to have the opportunity to pursue the American dream; and WHEREAS, the Volunteer State is proud to be the home of the awe-inspiring Lisa Sherman Luna, an immigrant to Nashville from Guatemala, who has dedicated her life to helping immigrants and refugees safely and securely live in the United States, apprising them of their rights and reminding them of their dignity; and WHEREAS, Ms. Luna is the first Latina executive director of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) and its sister organization, TIRRC Votes, and her incomparable captaincy chartered a course for the organization through the difficulties of COVID-19, settled TIRRC into its new headquarters, and multiplied its staff and programs to lead robust statewide organizing efforts; and WHEREAS, her expansive positive influence and evident leadership skills can also be found on the executive committee of the National Partnership for New Americans, the board of the National Immigration Law Center's Immigrant Justice Fund, and the steering committee for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement; and WHEREAS, prior to leading TIRRC, Ms. Luna worked in the international human rights field in New York, London, and Senegal, offering her a global perspective that accentuates and informs her work here in the United States; and WHEREAS, Ms. Luna's skills have only been further enhanced and enriched by her studies at King's College London, where she earned a master's degree in conflict, security, and - 2 - 003942 development from the Department of War Studies, and her eloquence in both English and Spanish has been indispensable to her success in the field; and WHEREAS, in saluting Ms. Luna on this special occasion, let us remember that when women succeed, America succeeds, as does Tennessee; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, that we hereby ho nor and commend Lisa Sherman Luna on her many contributions to the State of Tennessee as we celebrate Women's Day on the Hill. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an appropriate copy of this resolution be prepared for presentation with this final clause omitted from such copy.
