55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to tuition exemptions at public institutions of higher
88 education for dependents of certain military personnel deployed in
99 combat zones.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Section 54.058, Education Code, is amended by
1212 adding Subsection (k) to read as follows:
1313 (k) An institution of higher education shall exempt from the
1414 payment of tuition a dependent child, including a stepchild, of a
1515 member of the Armed Forces of the United States for a semester or
1616 other academic term during which the member of the armed forces is
1717 deployed to combat or a combat support posting in a foreign country.
1818 SECTION 2. Section 54.058(k), Education Code, as added by
1919 this Act, applies beginning with tuition charged by a public
2020 institution of higher education for the 2009-2010 academic year.
2121 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2222 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2323 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2424 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2525 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
