| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended | |
| 11 | 11 | by adding Subsection (k) to read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | (k) A state or local governmental entity that appoints or | |
| 13 | 13 | employs peace officers shall give a peace officer paid leave time to | |
| 14 | 14 | attend the education and training program on de-escalation and | |
| 15 | 15 | crisis intervention techniques under Subsection (j). | |
| 16 | 16 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | |
| 17 | 17 | to a peace officer who takes an education and training program that | |
| 18 | 18 | occurs on or after the effective date of this Act. | |
| 19 | 19 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
