88 relating to the designation of May 9 as Willie Velasquez Day.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 662, Government Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 662.014 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 662.014. OPTIONAL HOLIDAY FOR WILLIE VELASQUEZ DAY.
1313 (a) The 9th day of May shall be designated "Willie Velasquez Day"
1414 in observance of the birthday of William "Willie" Cardenas
1515 Velasquez.
1616 (b) The administrative head of a state agency may allow an
1717 employee of the agency to have a day off with pay on Willie
1818 Velasquez Day in lieu of any other state holiday that occurs on a
1919 weekday, other than a weekday on which an election is held
2020 throughout the state, on which the state agency is required to be
2121 open but on which the operations of the agency are required to be
2222 maintained at only a minimum level.
2323 (c) On Willie Velasquez Day, each state agency shall remain
2424 open and conduct the operations of the agency at a minimum level.
2525 (d) A holiday allowed under this section is in lieu of
2626 another holiday prescribed by law. The total number of holidays in
2727 a year to which an employee of a state agency is entitled is not
2828 changed by this section.
2929 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
