| 8 | 8 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 9 | 9 | SECTION 1. Section 502.002, Transportation Code, is amended | |
| 10 | 10 | by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (a-1) to read as | |
| 11 | 11 | follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | (a) The owner of a motor vehicle[, trailer, or semitrailer] | |
| 13 | 13 | shall apply for the registration of the vehicle for: | |
| 14 | 14 | (1) each registration year in which the vehicle is | |
| 15 | 15 | capable of being operated [used or to be used] on a public highway; | |
| 16 | 16 | and | |
| 17 | 17 | (2) if the vehicle is unregistered for a registration | |
| 18 | 18 | year that has begun and that applies to the vehicle and if the | |
| 19 | 19 | vehicle is capable of being operated [used or to be used] on a | |
| 20 | 20 | public highway, the remaining portion of that registration year. | |
| 21 | 21 | (a-1) The owner of a trailer or semitrailer shall apply for | |
| 22 | 22 | the registration of the vehicle for: | |
| 23 | 23 | (1) each registration year in which the vehicle is | |
| 24 | 24 | used or to be used on a public highway; and | |
| 25 | 25 | (2) if the vehicle is unregistered for a registration | |
| 26 | 26 | year that has begun and that applies to the vehicle and if the | |
| 27 | 27 | vehicle is used or to be used on a public highway, the remaining | |
| 28 | 28 | portion of that registration year. | |
| 29 | 29 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
