55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to a study regarding changing the state minimum wage to the
88 living wage.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. (a) In this section, "living wage" means an
1111 employee's wage equal to or greater than the per diem wage that
1212 would result in annual compensation of at least the federal poverty
1313 level for a family of a designated size.
1414 (b) The comptroller shall conduct a study on the probable
1515 effect on state expenditures for state-provided benefits,
1616 including net savings relating to the provision of those benefits,
1717 if the state changed the minimum wage to a living wage.
1818 (c) Not later than September 1, 2010, the comptroller shall
1919 report the results of the study conducted under Subsection (b) of
2020 this section to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker
2121 of the house of representatives, and the standing committee of each
2222 house with jurisdiction over the minimum wage.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
