7 | 7 | relating to a study regarding changing the state minimum wage to the | |

9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. (a) In this section, "living wage" means an | |
11 | 11 | employee's wage equal to or greater than the per diem wage that | |
12 | 12 | would result in annual compensation of at least the federal poverty | |
13 | 13 | level for a family of a designated size. | |
14 | 14 | (b) The comptroller shall conduct a study on the probable | |
15 | 15 | effect on state expenditures for state-provided benefits, | |
16 | 16 | including net savings relating to the provision of those benefits, | |
17 | 17 | if the state changed the minimum wage to a living wage. | |
18 | 18 | (c) Not later than September 1, 2010, the comptroller shall | |
19 | 19 | report the results of the study conducted under Subsection (b) of | |
20 | 20 | this section to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker | |
21 | 21 | of the house of representatives, and the standing committee of each | |
22 | 22 | house with jurisdiction over the minimum wage. | |
23 | 23 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
