55 AN ACT
66 relating to the training and certification of certain members or
77 former members of the military as correctional officers.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by
1010 adding Section 493.034 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 493.034. TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION OF CERTAIN MEMBERS
1212 OF THE MILITARY AS CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS. (a) The department shall
1313 establish and implement a streamlined program to train and certify
1414 as a correctional officer an individual who is:
1515 (1) a member of a reserve component of the United
1616 States armed forces; or
1717 (2) a former member of the United States armed forces
1818 or a reserve component of the United States armed forces who has
1919 received an honorable or general discharge.
2020 (b) To the extent practicable, the department shall model
2121 the program established under this section after the Troops to
2222 Teachers program operated by the United States Department of
2323 Education and Department of Defense.
2424 SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date
2525 of this Act, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice shall
2626 establish and implement a program to train and certify members and
2727 former members of the military as correctional officers as required
2828 by Section 493.034, Government Code, as added by this Act.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
