| 7 | 7 | | former members of the military as correctional officers. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | adding Section 493.034 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 493.034. TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION OF CERTAIN MEMBERS |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | OF THE MILITARY AS CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS. (a) The department shall |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | establish and implement a streamlined program to train and certify |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | as a correctional officer an individual who is: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (1) a member of a reserve component of the United |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | States armed forces; or |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (2) a former member of the United States armed forces |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | or a reserve component of the United States armed forces who has |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | received an honorable or general discharge. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (b) To the extent practicable, the department shall model |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the program established under this section after the Troops to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Teachers program operated by the United States Department of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Education and Department of Defense. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | of this Act, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice shall |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | establish and implement a program to train and certify members and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | former members of the military as correctional officers as required |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | by Section 493.034, Government Code, as added by this Act. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
