| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 30.00044(b), Government Code, is amended | |
| 11 | 11 | to read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | (b) The governing body shall by ordinance appoint a [A] | |
| 13 | 13 | municipal judge [is elected by the qualified voters of the city] for | |
| 14 | 14 | a term of four years. | |
| 15 | 15 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act to Section | |
| 16 | 16 | 30.00044, Government Code, applies only to a vacancy in the office | |
| 17 | 17 | of municipal judge in the City of Lubbock that occurs on or after | |
| 18 | 18 | the effective date of this Act. A person serving as a municipal | |
| 19 | 19 | judge in the City of Lubbock on the effective date of this Act | |
| 20 | 20 | continues to serve in that office for the remainder of the term to | |
| 21 | 21 | which the person was elected or appointed, unless otherwise removed | |
| 22 | 22 | as provided by law. | |
| 23 | 23 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
