5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Friends and family are mourning the loss of Carl |

6 | 6 | | Walter Smith of Paris, Texas, who died on January 19, 2009, at the |

7 | 7 | | age of 84; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Carl Smith was born on February 16, 1924, to Clinton |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Gladys Smith in New Bedford, Massachusetts; he served his |
---|
10 | 10 | | country as a member of the United States Army during World War II, |
---|
11 | 11 | | helping to build Camp Maxey; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Following the war, Mr. Smith worked for the Lamar |
---|
13 | 13 | | Creamery Company in Paris; later, he was a manager for the Paris |
---|
14 | 14 | | Goodyear Store as well as the Firestone Tire Company in Bonham, |
---|
15 | 15 | | where he and his wife also owned and operated a furniture store; |
---|
16 | 16 | | returning to Paris, he worked in maintenance at Paris High School |
---|
17 | 17 | | for a decade until his retirement; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the father of three daughters, Carla |
---|
19 | 19 | | Floyd, Barbara Jacinto, and the late Donna Wright; he was a member |
---|
20 | 20 | | of the Baptist faith and devoted himself to local sports activities |
---|
21 | 21 | | as a baseball umpire and basketball referee; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Though he is deeply missed, Carl Smith will long be |
---|
23 | 23 | | remembered with great admiration and affection by those fortunate |
---|
24 | 24 | | enough to have shared in the richness of his life; now, therefore, |
---|

26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

27 | 27 | | hereby pay tribute to the life of Carl Walter Smith and extend |

28 | 28 | | sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters, |

29 | 29 | | Carla Floyd and Barbara Jacinto and her husband, Tony; to the mother |

30 | 30 | | of his children, Eloise Smith; to his grandchildren, Jay Armstrong |

31 | 31 | | and his wife, Tonya, Mitzi Springer and her husband, Jerry, Lori |
