55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The observance of National Disability Awareness
77 Week from October 25 to 31, 2009, provides a fitting opportunity for
88 Texans to show their support for their fellow citizens who have
99 physical and developmental disabilities; and
1010 WHEREAS, Community Options, Inc., launched National
1111 Disability Awareness Week in October 2007 for the purpose of
1212 educating the public about individuals with disabilities,
1313 advocating on their behalf, and promoting philanthropic endeavors;
1414 a national nonprofit organization with offices in Dallas, Amarillo,
1515 El Paso, and San Antonio, Community Options provides residential,
1616 employment, and recreational opportunities to people with
1717 disabilities; its mission is to utilize innovative approaches to
1818 assist these individuals in developing job skills, engaging in
1919 productive work, and participating in their communities, and to
2020 enable them to make choices about their lives and form meaningful
2121 relationships; and
2222 WHEREAS, More than one million individuals have successfully
2323 entered the workforce since the passage of the Americans with
2424 Disabilities Act in 1990, and new generations of young people with
2525 disabilities continue to gain independence and contribute to
2626 society; through open houses, family activities, and community
2727 outreach, Disability Awareness Week educates the public about
2828 disabilities and emphasizes the rights of these individuals to
2929 maximize their potential; and
3030 WHEREAS, By commemorating Disability Awareness Week in Texas
3131 schools, communities, and workplaces, residents of the Lone Star
3232 State are promoting greater understanding for people with
3333 disabilities, and these efforts are contributing to the greater
3434 good of our state; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3636 hereby designate October 25 to 31, 2009, as Disability Awareness
3737 Week in Texas and encourage all citizens to learn about the
3838 disabilities that affect many Texans and encourage families and
3939 individuals affected by disabilities to seek out and use the
4040 resources that are available to them in their communities.
