| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The observance of National Disability Awareness |

| 7 | 7 | | Week from October 25 to 31, 2009, provides a fitting opportunity for |

| 8 | 8 | | Texans to show their support for their fellow citizens who have |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | physical and developmental disabilities; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Community Options, Inc., launched National |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Disability Awareness Week in October 2007 for the purpose of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | educating the public about individuals with disabilities, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | advocating on their behalf, and promoting philanthropic endeavors; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | a national nonprofit organization with offices in Dallas, Amarillo, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | El Paso, and San Antonio, Community Options provides residential, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | employment, and recreational opportunities to people with |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | disabilities; its mission is to utilize innovative approaches to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | assist these individuals in developing job skills, engaging in |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | productive work, and participating in their communities, and to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | enable them to make choices about their lives and form meaningful |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | relationships; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, More than one million individuals have successfully |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | entered the workforce since the passage of the Americans with |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Disabilities Act in 1990, and new generations of young people with |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | disabilities continue to gain independence and contribute to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | society; through open houses, family activities, and community |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | outreach, Disability Awareness Week educates the public about |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | disabilities and emphasizes the rights of these individuals to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | maximize their potential; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, By commemorating Disability Awareness Week in Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | schools, communities, and workplaces, residents of the Lone Star |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | State are promoting greater understanding for people with |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | disabilities, and these efforts are contributing to the greater |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | good of our state; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | hereby designate October 25 to 31, 2009, as Disability Awareness |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Week in Texas and encourage all citizens to learn about the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | disabilities that affect many Texans and encourage families and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | individuals affected by disabilities to seek out and use the |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | resources that are available to them in their communities. |
