 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 WHEREAS, The observance of National Disability Awareness
 Week from October 25 to 31, 2009, provides a fitting opportunity for
 Texans to show their support for their fellow citizens who have
 physical and developmental disabilities; and
 WHEREAS, Community Options, Inc., launched National
 Disability Awareness Week in October 2007 for the purpose of
 educating the public about individuals with disabilities,
 advocating on their behalf, and promoting philanthropic endeavors;
 a national nonprofit organization with offices in Dallas, Amarillo,
 El Paso, and San Antonio, Community Options provides residential,
 employment, and recreational opportunities to people with
 disabilities; its mission is to utilize innovative approaches to
 assist these individuals in developing job skills, engaging in
 productive work, and participating in their communities, and to
 enable them to make choices about their lives and form meaningful
 relationships; and
 WHEREAS, More than one million individuals have successfully
 entered the workforce since the passage of the Americans with
 Disabilities Act in 1990, and new generations of young people with
 disabilities continue to gain independence and contribute to
 society; through open houses, family activities, and community
 outreach, Disability Awareness Week educates the public about
 disabilities and emphasizes the rights of these individuals to
 maximize their potential; and
 WHEREAS, By commemorating Disability Awareness Week in Texas
 schools, communities, and workplaces, residents of the Lone Star
 State are promoting greater understanding for people with
 disabilities, and these efforts are contributing to the greater
 good of our state; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
 hereby designate October 25 to 31, 2009, as Disability Awareness
 Week in Texas and encourage all citizens to learn about the
 disabilities that affect many Texans and encourage families and
 individuals affected by disabilities to seek out and use the
 resources that are available to them in their communities.
