5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Calvin Nelson Clyde, Jr., is celebrating his 88th |

6 | 6 | | birthday on April 6, 2009, and this occasion provides a welcome |
---|
7 | 7 | | opportunity to honor this well-known and highly respected Tyler |
---|
8 | 8 | | citizen; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio in 1921, Calvin Clyde moved to |
---|
10 | 10 | | Tyler the following year with his parents, C. N. and Emma Butler |
---|
11 | 11 | | Clyde, and he has called the city home ever since; he graduated from |
---|
12 | 12 | | Tyler High School in 1937 and completed college studies at Kemper |
---|
13 | 13 | | Military School in Missouri and at Southern Methodist University, |
---|
14 | 14 | | where he attained a bachelor's degree in journalism with honors in |
---|
15 | 15 | | 1941; that same year, he wed Patsy Elizabeth Kittrell, and the |
---|
16 | 16 | | couple raised four children, Carole, Nelson, Thomas, and Eloise; |
---|
17 | 17 | | through the years, the family has extended to third and fourth |
---|
18 | 18 | | generations, and Mr. Clyde takes great pride in his eight |
---|
19 | 19 | | grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, After the United States entered World War II, Mr. |
---|
21 | 21 | | Clyde joined the U.S. Navy; he served with aviation squadrons in the |
---|
22 | 22 | | South Pacific as well as in Texas and held the rank of lieutenant at |
---|
23 | 23 | | the time of his discharge in 1945; he returned to uniform in the |
---|
24 | 24 | | early 1950s and was press officer for the 8th Naval District, |
---|
25 | 25 | | ultimately becoming a lieutenant commander; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Clyde's long and accomplished career in |
---|
27 | 27 | | journalism and publishing began at age 15, when he started training |
---|
28 | 28 | | as a reporter; in 1951, he became general manager of the T. B. |
---|
29 | 29 | | Butler Publishing Company, publisher of the Tyler Morning |
---|
30 | 30 | | Telegraph, and in 1973, he added the titles of president and |
---|
31 | 31 | | chairman of the board; he retired from his direct management duties |
---|
32 | 32 | | in 1990, but he continues to provide his expertise to the company in |
---|
33 | 33 | | his role as chairman; an admired figure among newspaper publishers |
---|
34 | 34 | | in the Lone Star State, he served as president of the Texas Daily |
---|
35 | 35 | | Newspaper Association and received the Pat Taggart Award as Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | Newspaper Leader of the Year in 1980; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to making his community an even better place |
---|
38 | 38 | | to live, Mr. Clyde has benefited a long list of civic organizations |
---|
39 | 39 | | and committees; he served as president of the Tyler Rotary Club and |
---|
40 | 40 | | the Tyler School Board and as director and committee chair of the |
---|
41 | 41 | | Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce; moreover, he is a trustee of the |
---|
42 | 42 | | Watson W. Wise Foundation and a former member of the Tyler |
---|
43 | 43 | | Industrial Foundation Board of Directors, the SMU Board of |
---|
44 | 44 | | Development, and the Southwest School of Printing Management Board; |
---|
45 | 45 | | and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, His achievements have been honored with a number of |
---|
47 | 47 | | accolades through the decades, including the 1949 Outstanding Young |
---|
48 | 48 | | Man of Tyler honor, the 1956 W. C. Windsor Award from the Tyler Area |
---|
49 | 49 | | Chamber of Commerce, and the 1979 Sportsman of the Year Award by |
---|
50 | 50 | | Ducks Unlimited; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his many professional and civic |
---|
52 | 52 | | activities, Mr. Clyde enjoys spending time with his family and |
---|
53 | 53 | | friends, as well as cooking, hunting, traveling, and collecting |
---|
54 | 54 | | postcards; in celebrating the passage of another year, Mr. Clyde |
---|
55 | 55 | | may reflect with pride on his wide-ranging accomplishments and on |
---|
56 | 56 | | the many significant contributions he has made to his community; |
---|
57 | 57 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

59 | 59 | | hereby honor Calvin Nelson Clyde, Jr., on his 88th birthday and |
---|
60 | 60 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be |
