44 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, Calvin Nelson Clyde, Jr., is celebrating his 88th
66 birthday on April 6, 2009, and this occasion provides a welcome
77 opportunity to honor this well-known and highly respected Tyler
88 citizen; and
99 WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio in 1921, Calvin Clyde moved to
1010 Tyler the following year with his parents, C. N. and Emma Butler
1111 Clyde, and he has called the city home ever since; he graduated from
1212 Tyler High School in 1937 and completed college studies at Kemper
1313 Military School in Missouri and at Southern Methodist University,
1414 where he attained a bachelor's degree in journalism with honors in
1515 1941; that same year, he wed Patsy Elizabeth Kittrell, and the
1616 couple raised four children, Carole, Nelson, Thomas, and Eloise;
1717 through the years, the family has extended to third and fourth
1818 generations, and Mr. Clyde takes great pride in his eight
1919 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and
2020 WHEREAS, After the United States entered World War II, Mr.
2121 Clyde joined the U.S. Navy; he served with aviation squadrons in the
2222 South Pacific as well as in Texas and held the rank of lieutenant at
2323 the time of his discharge in 1945; he returned to uniform in the
2424 early 1950s and was press officer for the 8th Naval District,
2525 ultimately becoming a lieutenant commander; and
2626 WHEREAS, Mr. Clyde's long and accomplished career in
2727 journalism and publishing began at age 15, when he started training
2828 as a reporter; in 1951, he became general manager of the T. B.
2929 Butler Publishing Company, publisher of the Tyler Morning
3030 Telegraph, and in 1973, he added the titles of president and
3131 chairman of the board; he retired from his direct management duties
3232 in 1990, but he continues to provide his expertise to the company in
3333 his role as chairman; an admired figure among newspaper publishers
3434 in the Lone Star State, he served as president of the Texas Daily
3535 Newspaper Association and received the Pat Taggart Award as Texas
3636 Newspaper Leader of the Year in 1980; and
3737 WHEREAS, Devoted to making his community an even better place
3838 to live, Mr. Clyde has benefited a long list of civic organizations
3939 and committees; he served as president of the Tyler Rotary Club and
4040 the Tyler School Board and as director and committee chair of the
4141 Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce; moreover, he is a trustee of the
4242 Watson W. Wise Foundation and a former member of the Tyler
4343 Industrial Foundation Board of Directors, the SMU Board of
4444 Development, and the Southwest School of Printing Management Board;
4545 and
4646 WHEREAS, His achievements have been honored with a number of
4747 accolades through the decades, including the 1949 Outstanding Young
4848 Man of Tyler honor, the 1956 W. C. Windsor Award from the Tyler Area
4949 Chamber of Commerce, and the 1979 Sportsman of the Year Award by
5050 Ducks Unlimited; and
5151 WHEREAS, In addition to his many professional and civic
5252 activities, Mr. Clyde enjoys spending time with his family and
5353 friends, as well as cooking, hunting, traveling, and collecting
5454 postcards; in celebrating the passage of another year, Mr. Clyde
5555 may reflect with pride on his wide-ranging accomplishments and on
5656 the many significant contributions he has made to his community;
5757 now, therefore, be it
5858 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
5959 hereby honor Calvin Nelson Clyde, Jr., on his 88th birthday and
6060 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be
6161 it further
6262 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6363 prepared for Mr. Clyde as an expression of high regard by the Texas
6464 House of Representatives and Senate.
