5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The late Roxie M. Fine of Orange Grove was an |

6 | 6 | | inspiration to numerous people, especially her Family, Career, and |
---|
7 | 7 | | Community Leaders of America students at Orange Grove High School, |
---|
8 | 8 | | and following her diagnosis with Stage IV unknown cancer in June |
---|
9 | 9 | | 2008, FCCLA students organized a project called A "FINE" Cause for |
---|
10 | 10 | | Unknown Cancer to raise awareness of the disease; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin is diagnosed |
---|
12 | 12 | | when metastatic cancer is found but the primary site of the cancer |
---|
13 | 13 | | cannot be determined; about two to four percent of all cancer |
---|
14 | 14 | | patients have a cancer whose primary site is never found, making it |
---|
15 | 15 | | difficult for doctors to plan the best treatment; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In their efforts to educate others about CUP, FCCLA |
---|
17 | 17 | | students realized that the disease was not represented by a |
---|
18 | 18 | | specific ribbon color, as are other forms of cancer, and they took |
---|
19 | 19 | | up the challenge of creating and implementing a CUP ribbon; they |
---|
20 | 20 | | ultimately chose a zebra stripe ribbon to reflect both Ms. Fine's |
---|
21 | 21 | | dynamic personality and the uniqueness of this particular form of |
---|
22 | 22 | | cancer; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Although their beloved teacher passed away on |
---|
24 | 24 | | December 2, 2008, FCCLA students have continued their campaign to |
---|
25 | 25 | | educate others about CUP; they raised nearly $28,000 at the Walk for |
---|
26 | 26 | | a "FINE" Cause, which they hosted on December 11, and subsequently |
---|
27 | 27 | | donated the funds to CUP research at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in |
---|
28 | 28 | | Houston; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Orange Grove High School FCCLA students are |
---|
30 | 30 | | channeling their grief over Roxie Fine into making a positive |
---|
31 | 31 | | difference in the fight against unknown cancer, and they have set an |
---|
32 | 32 | | outstanding example of teamwork and generosity to which all may |
---|
33 | 33 | | aspire; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | hereby commend Orange Grove High School Family, Career, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | Community Leaders of America students for their efforts to raise |
---|
37 | 37 | | awareness of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin and for |
---|
38 | 38 | | choosing zebra stripes as the ribbon color to symbolize this rare |
---|
39 | 39 | | form of cancer; and, be it further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

41 | 41 | | prepared for Orange Grove High School as an expression of high |

42 | 42 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate. |
