44 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, The Brazos River is the longest river in Texas, with
66 a watershed stretching from New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico;
77 intertwined with the history of the Lone Star State, the Brazos was
88 well-known to early Spanish explorers, who called it "Los Brazos de
99 Dios," or "the Arms of God"; and
1010 WHEREAS, In its 840-mile journey from the confluence of the
1111 Salt and Double Mountain Forks in Stonewall County, the Brazos
1212 crosses most of the physiographic regions of Texas, including the
1313 High Plains, the West Texas Rolling Plains, the Western Cross
1414 Timbers, the Grand Prairie, and the Gulf Coastal Plain; one of the
1515 loveliest stretches, between Possum Kingdom Reservoir and Lake
1616 Whitney, was immortalized by John Graves in his acclaimed and
1717 enduringly popular book Goodbye to a River, first published in
1818 1960; the 79th Texas Legislature recognized the author's
1919 contributions to literature and to public awareness of the Brazos
2020 by designating as the John Graves Scenic Riverway the portion of the
2121 river basin downstream of the Morris Shepard Dam to the county line
2222 between Parker and Hood Counties; and
2323 WHEREAS, Equally picturesque is the neighboring section of
2424 the Brazos that meanders through the eastern third of Somervell
2525 County, where Mr. Graves has lived for decades on a Glen Rose farm;
2626 the riverbanks are lush with cedar, live oaks, and post oaks, and
2727 limestone cliffs and outcroppings provide a dramatic backdrop as
2828 kayakers and canoeists enjoy the gentle, winding course of the
2929 water, which is well suited to families and novice paddlers; the
3030 landscape here is characterized by vistas of rocky hills and small,
3131 fertile valleys, and the idyllic, agrarian setting is populated by
3232 a wide variety of wildlife, such as white-tailed deer, turkey, fox,
3333 and rabbits; bird-watchers delight in the region's great horned
3434 owls, whip-poor-wills, and waterfowl; visitors to this resort area
3535 can also witness some of the state's most vibrant fall colors and
3636 enjoy an abundance of wildflowers in the spring; and
3737 WHEREAS, Generations of Texans have rejoiced in the
3838 unforgettable beauty of the Brazos River Basin in Somervell County,
3939 and nearly half a century after John Graves wrote his eloquent
4040 tribute, this part of the Brazos remains a natural treasure; now,
4141 therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
4343 hereby designate the section of the Brazos River Basin and its
