7 | 7 | | intertwined with the history of the Lone Star State, the Brazos was |

8 | 8 | | well-known to early Spanish explorers, who called it "Los Brazos de |

9 | 9 | | Dios," or "the Arms of God"; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In its 840-mile journey from the confluence of the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Salt and Double Mountain Forks in Stonewall County, the Brazos |
---|
12 | 12 | | crosses most of the physiographic regions of Texas, including the |
---|
13 | 13 | | High Plains, the West Texas Rolling Plains, the Western Cross |
---|
14 | 14 | | Timbers, the Grand Prairie, and the Gulf Coastal Plain; one of the |
---|
15 | 15 | | loveliest stretches, between Possum Kingdom Reservoir and Lake |
---|
16 | 16 | | Whitney, was immortalized by John Graves in his acclaimed and |
---|
17 | 17 | | enduringly popular book Goodbye to a River, first published in |
---|
18 | 18 | | 1960; the 79th Texas Legislature recognized the author's |
---|
19 | 19 | | contributions to literature and to public awareness of the Brazos |
---|
20 | 20 | | by designating as the John Graves Scenic Riverway the portion of the |
---|
21 | 21 | | river basin downstream of the Morris Shepard Dam to the county line |
---|
22 | 22 | | between Parker and Hood Counties; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Equally picturesque is the neighboring section of |
---|
24 | 24 | | the Brazos that meanders through the eastern third of Somervell |
---|
25 | 25 | | County, where Mr. Graves has lived for decades on a Glen Rose farm; |
---|
26 | 26 | | the riverbanks are lush with cedar, live oaks, and post oaks, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | limestone cliffs and outcroppings provide a dramatic backdrop as |
---|
28 | 28 | | kayakers and canoeists enjoy the gentle, winding course of the |
---|
29 | 29 | | water, which is well suited to families and novice paddlers; the |
---|
30 | 30 | | landscape here is characterized by vistas of rocky hills and small, |
---|
31 | 31 | | fertile valleys, and the idyllic, agrarian setting is populated by |
---|
32 | 32 | | a wide variety of wildlife, such as white-tailed deer, turkey, fox, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and rabbits; bird-watchers delight in the region's great horned |

34 | 34 | | owls, whip-poor-wills, and waterfowl; visitors to this resort area |

35 | 35 | | can also witness some of the state's most vibrant fall colors and |

37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Generations of Texans have rejoiced in the |

38 | 38 | | unforgettable beauty of the Brazos River Basin in Somervell County, |

40 | 40 | | tribute, this part of the Brazos remains a natural treasure; now, |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

43 | 43 | | hereby designate the section of the Brazos River Basin and its |

44 | 44 | | contributing watershed within Somervell County as the Scenic |

45 | 45 | | Riverway of Somervell County. |
