5	5	WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished native son
6	6	with the passing of the Honorable George E. "Buddy" West on June 25,
7	7	2008, yet his contributions continue to resonate in the lives of his
8	8	fellow Texans; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Buddy West was first elected as the state
10	10	representative for District 81 in 1992 and spent 16 years in the
11	11	house; he was a highly effective advocate for his constituents in
12	12	Ector, Andrews, and Winkler Counties, and his wisdom and guidance
13	13	had a positive influence on his colleagues in the house; he was
14	14	particularly active in the areas of energy policy and education,
15	15	chairing the House Committee on Energy Resources, contributing to
16	16	committees on public education and higher education, and supporting
17	17	the growth of his alma mater, The University of Texas of the Permian
18	18	Basin; by his side throughout his legislative career was his wife,
19	19	successful real estate agent and admired Odessa resident Shirley
20	20	West, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is all the better for the efforts
22	22	of this esteemed Texan, and it is most appropriate that lasting
23	23	tribute be paid to his service through the naming of a state
24	24	facility in his honor; and
25	25	WHEREAS, By this resolution, the presiding officers and
26	26	members of the house and senate express support and consent for
27	27	naming a permanent facility at The University of Texas of the
28	28	Permian Basin in honor of Buddy and Shirley West, and this
29	29	resolution serves as the authorization required by Section
30	30	2165.005, Government Code; now, therefore, be it
31	31	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
32	32	hereby direct the Texas Facilities Commission to name a permanent
33	33	facility at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin in honor of
34	34	Buddy and Shirley West; and, be it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
36	36	copy of this resolution to the chair and executive director of the
37	37	Texas Facilities Commission.
