5	5	WHEREAS, Many residents of Tyler will be in Austin to
6	6	celebrate Tyler Days at the State Capitol from March 2 to March 3,
7	7	2009, and this occasion offers an ideal opportunity to extol the
8	8	city's many virtues; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Nestled among the Piney Woods of East Texas, Tyler's
10	10	great natural beauty goes hand in hand with the energy and amenities
11	11	of a bustling modern city, and its residents take justifiable pride
12	12	in their remarkable hometown; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Tyler has through the years benefited greatly from
14	14	the region's abundant natural resources, and agriculture has long
15	15	provided a strong foundation for the local economy; cotton was
16	16	originally the predominant cash crop, but by the turn of the century
17	17	the area was shipping 100 railroad cars of peaches a day and more
18	18	strawberries than the rest of the state combined; and
19	19	WHEREAS, A devastating peach blight in 1902 soon revealed
20	20	itself a blessing in disguise, as farmers turned to growing roses
21	21	that are now Tyler's most famous export; by the 1940s, more than
22	22	half the nation's rosebushes came from Tyler, and today the city is
23	23	renowned as the home of the Texas Rose Festival and the Municipal
24	24	Rose Garden and Museum; and
25	25	WHEREAS, In 1930, the area's sandy loam yielded up a
26	26	different kind of bounty when the East Texas oil field was
27	27	discovered, and the petroleum industry quickly became a mainstay of
28	28	the local economy, joined more recently by manufacturing and the
29	29	timber industry; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Tyler is also acknowledged to be the area's
31	31	preeminent medical and educational center, and the presence of
32	32	numerous state-of-the-art health care facilities contributes
33	33	greatly to the well-being of local citizens, while the city's
34	34	top-flight colleges and university open new vistas of learning and
35	35	opportunity to thousands of students each year; and
36	36	WHEREAS, The city's recreational options are many and varied,
37	37	and visitors may choose such diverse and appealing destinations as
38	38	the Caldwell Zoo, Tyler Rose Garden, Discovery Science Place, and
39	39	the Tyler Museum of Art, while fishing and boating enthusiasts can
40	40	pursue their pleasures at Lakes Palestine, Tyler, and Tyler East;
41	41	and
42	42	WHEREAS, Tyler's greatest asset continues to be its dynamic
43	43	and friendly citizens, and even as they look back with pride and
44	44	affection on the city's notable past, they eagerly embrace the
45	45	challenges and opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
47	47	hereby designate March 2 to March 3, 2009, as Tyler Days at the
48	48	State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
49	49	wishes for a memorable and enjoyable visit to Austin.
