| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Kenneth |

| 6 | 6 | | Helm of Sumner, who died on December 31, 2008, at the age of 78; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Helm was born to Abner and Corinne Copening |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Helm on October 24, 1930, and grew up in Direct; after graduating |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | from Direct High School in 1948, he attended Paris Junior College; |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty during the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served for |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | four years; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Helm returned to Direct after his discharge from |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the military and joined Uarco, Inc.; following a 31-year tenure |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with that company, he retired in 1986 and opened an auto salvage |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | service, which he operated from 1987 to 1999; he was a volunteer |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | firefighter in the early years of the Direct Volunteer Fire |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Department; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Helm was also a rancher, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and he was widely respected as a jack-of-all-trades, capable of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | handling any job that needed doing; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Helm worked hard all his life and made his |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | own way in the world, and he will forever be remembered with deep |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | affection by all who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | hereby pay tribute to the life of Kenneth Helm and extend sincere |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | condolences to the members of his family: to his former spouse, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Billie McCann Helm; to his daughter, Lana Beth; to his son, Kenny; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | to his former daughter-in-law, Sue Jamerson; to his brothers, Jerry |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Delbert Helm and his wife, Inez, V. Donald Helm, and Wayne Helm and |

| 32 | 32 | | his wife, Ann; to his sister, Elsie Parson; and to his other |
