H.C.R. No. 80
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The celebration of National Women's History Month in
March 2009 provides a fitting opportunity to acknowledge the myriad
achievements and immeasurable contributions of American women; and
WHEREAS, To raise awareness of women's history in the
traditional classroom curriculum as well as in the public
consciousness, an observance lasting a week began in the late
1970s; the movement spread to numerous cities and counties across
the country, and by 1987 the National Women's History Project had
petitioned Congress to expand the national celebration to the
entire month of March; the event continues today as a way of
ensuring that the history of women is duly recognized in schools,
workplaces, and communities throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, In recent years, National Women's History Month has
sparked a growing interest in rediscovering forgotten events and
people that are noteworthy in the history of American women, and
such groups as the President's Commission on the Celebration of
Women in American History and the Women's Progress Commemorative
Commission have recommended programs for teaching women's history
and have identified historical sites that are important for
preservation; and
WHEREAS, The theme for the 2009 observance of National
Women's History Month is "Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet,"
and it honors the individuals who are actively involved in the
environmental protection movement at local, state, and national
levels; and
WHEREAS, Women of every race, ethnicity, and economic
background have contributed to the strength of our nation and our
state, and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to the many
pioneering women in this country and to honor all those who are
carrying on the legacy of these women in the Lone Star State; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby recognize March 2009 as National Women's History Month and
encourage all Texans to learn more about the inspiring women who
have shaped the history of our state.
