5	5	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Brazoria County are gathering in
6	6	Austin to celebrate Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol on
7	7	March 10, 2009; and
8	8	WHEREAS, This section of coastal prairie along the Brazos
9	9	River was inhabited during the first three centuries of Texas'
10	10	recorded history by the nomadic Karankawa Indians; the Spanish
11	11	explorer Cabeza de Vaca passed through the region as early as 1528,
12	12	and the pirate Jean Lafitte was rumored to have used the mouth of
13	13	the Brazos as a refuge; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The region was settled in the 1820s by members of
15	15	Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred; Henry Smith of Brazoria
16	16	served as the first American governor of Texas and as a leader of
17	17	the movement for independence, and the town of Columbia served as
18	18	the capital of Texas during the first Texas Congress; in 1836,
19	19	Brazoria County became one of the original counties established by
20	20	the new republic; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Farming and ranching initially constituted the
22	22	mainstays of the county's economy; the discovery of oil and sulfur
23	23	deposits in the early 20th century helped the region grow, and
24	24	chemical processing became increasingly important during World War
25	25	II and after; commercial fishing and the recreation industry have
26	26	helped to ensure continuing economic development; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Today, the eight cities of the Brazosport
28	28	area--Clute, Freeport, Jones Creek, Lake Jackson, Oyster Creek,
29	29	Quintana, Richwood, and Surfside Beach--boast excellent schools
30	30	and affordable housing; visitors and residents alike take great
31	31	pleasure in 27 miles of sandy beaches, bay and offshore fishing,
32	32	scuba diving, and outstanding birdwatching at the Brazoria and San
33	33	Bernard National Wildlife Refuges; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Angleton, the county seat, abounds with antique
35	35	shops and scenic parks and hosts the county fair, one of the largest
36	36	in Texas, every October and Christmas on the Square every December;
37	37	the town of Alvin is home to the Nolan Ryan Center, which celebrates
38	38	the career of its native son and Baseball Hall of Famer; moreover,
39	39	the nearby town of Pearland is a center for the chemical and oil
40	40	industries; and
41	41	WHEREAS, The educational opportunities available to students
42	42	at Alvin Community College and Brazosport College further
43	43	contribute to the county's many amenities; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich heritage, the
45	45	hardworking citizens of Brazoria County are looking ahead to the
46	46	opportunities of the future and continuing to contribute greatly to
47	47	the growth and prosperity of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be
48	48	it
49	49	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
50	50	hereby declare March 10, 2009, Brazoria County Day at the State
51	51	Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best wishes for a
52	52	memorable and meaningful stay in Austin.
