| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chandice Covington of Lubbock was appointed the |

| 6 | 6 | | Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair for Nursing Excellence in |

| 7 | 7 | | Women's Health at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | on March 3, 2009; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Beaumont, Dr. Covington holds a master's |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | degree in nursing from The University of Texas Medical Branch at |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Galveston and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | she is a pediatric nurse practitioner who most recently served as |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | dean of the College of Nursing at the University of North Dakota; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair, which was |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | made possible by Marie Hall and other donors in memory of Ms. Hall's |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | mother, is based at the Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Lubbock and collaborates with the Laura W. Bush Institute of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Women's Health on research endeavors; Dr. Covington is the first |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Perry School of Nursing faculty member to be appointed to a chair |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | position within a Texas Tech health sciences institute and the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | first to receive a joint appointment with the School of Medicine; |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed health care professional will serve as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | a clinician, educator, and researcher; specializing in women's |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | health and rural health issues, she plans to focus her research on |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | breast and cervical cancer prevention, as well as on the prevention |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of breast milk transmission of HIV in Kenya; she will also study how |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | sleep loss affects women's metabolism, depression, and cognitive |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | ability; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Chandice Covington has long demonstrated an |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | outstanding commitment to women's health, and the Texas Tech |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | University Health Sciences Center is indeed fortunate to count her |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | among its roster of exceptional faculty; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Chandice Covington on her |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | appointment as the Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair for Nursing |

| 38 | 38 | | Excellence in Women's Health and extend to her sincere best wishes |
