 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Dr. Chandice Covington of Lubbock was appointed the
 Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair for Nursing Excellence in
 Women's Health at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
 on March 3, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, A native of Beaumont, Dr. Covington holds a master's
 degree in nursing from The University of Texas Medical Branch at
 Galveston and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan;
 she is a pediatric nurse practitioner who most recently served as
 dean of the College of Nursing at the University of North Dakota;
 and
 WHEREAS, The Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair, which was
 made possible by Marie Hall and other donors in memory of Ms. Hall's
 mother, is based at the Anita Thigpen Perry School of Nursing in
 Lubbock and collaborates with the Laura W. Bush Institute of
 Women's Health on research endeavors; Dr. Covington is the first
 Perry School of Nursing faculty member to be appointed to a chair
 position within a Texas Tech health sciences institute and the
 first to receive a joint appointment with the School of Medicine;
 and
 WHEREAS, This esteemed health care professional will serve as
 a clinician, educator, and researcher; specializing in women's
 health and rural health issues, she plans to focus her research on
 breast and cervical cancer prevention, as well as on the prevention
 of breast milk transmission of HIV in Kenya; she will also study how
 sleep loss affects women's metabolism, depression, and cognitive
 ability; and
 WHEREAS, Chandice Covington has long demonstrated an
 outstanding commitment to women's health, and the Texas Tech
 University Health Sciences Center is indeed fortunate to count her
 among its roster of exceptional faculty; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Chandice Covington on her
 appointment as the Florence Thelma Hall Endowed Chair for Nursing
 Excellence in Women's Health and extend to her sincere best wishes
 for continued success with her important work; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Covington as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
