5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Alicia Rascon, chief executive officer and |

6 | 6 | | cofounder of Latinitas, has made a positive difference in the lives |

7 | 7 | | of many young Texans; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Jalisco, Mexico, Ms. Rascon grew up in El |
---|
9 | 9 | | Paso and earned a journalism degree from The University of Texas; |
---|
10 | 10 | | following her graduation, she worked as a reading specialist for |
---|
11 | 11 | | bilingual students through AmeriCorps and taught in the Austin |
---|
12 | 12 | | Independent School District; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Long dedicated to serving her community, she has |
---|
14 | 14 | | worked as a development associate for the Austin Children's Museum, |
---|
15 | 15 | | production assistant with National Public Radio's Latino USA, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | director of communications for CASA of Travis County; in her free |
---|
17 | 17 | | time, she has volunteered with LULAC, the Junior League of Austin's |
---|
18 | 18 | | Con Mi Madre program, La Luz de Amistad, and the Hispanic Women's |
---|
19 | 19 | | Network of Texas; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, under her direction, Latinitas aims to |
---|
21 | 21 | | inform, entertain, and inspire young Latinas so that they may |
---|
22 | 22 | | become healthy, confident, and successful women; to that end, the |
---|
23 | 23 | | group uses journalism to provide a forum for Latina youth to have a |
---|
24 | 24 | | voice, while fostering a positive self-image and encouraging |
---|
25 | 25 | | cultural awareness and pride; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Latinitas offers a number of programs, including |
---|
27 | 27 | | LatinitasMagazine.Org, a bilingual webzine especially for Hispanic |
---|
28 | 28 | | girls; Club Latinitas, an intensive after-school newsroom where |
---|
29 | 29 | | participants learn fundamental journalism skills; and Teen |
---|
30 | 30 | | Reporter Intern Program, a mentorship program for high school |
---|
31 | 31 | | students who help make editorial decisions for Latinitas Magazine; |
---|
32 | 32 | | and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In addition to these worthwhile initiatives, the |
---|
34 | 34 | | organization provides college internships, holds an annual media |
---|
35 | 35 | | career and college conference for girls, and hosts outreach |
---|
36 | 36 | | workshops and camps, which are overseen by Ms. Rascon in her role as |
---|
37 | 37 | | director of community outreach; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, A trailblazer and gifted leader, Alicia Rascon is |
---|
39 | 39 | | helping to set our youth on a path to a bright future, and her work |
---|
40 | 40 | | is an inspiration to all who know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby honor Alicia Rascon for her work with Latinitas |
---|
43 | 43 | | and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all |
---|
44 | 44 | | her endeavors; and, be it further |
