44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Jordan Winters, Sr., of San Antonio on February 12, 2009,
77 at the age of 82; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in the community of Wetmore on May 28, 1926,
99 Jordan Winters was the son of Albert and Louise Winters; as a young
1010 man, he worked alongside his father as a sharecropper until 1944,
1111 when he was drafted by the U.S. Marine Corps, and he served his
1212 country with distinction through the end of World War II; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1949, he married the love of his life, Evelyn
1414 Jackson, whom he had met while attending Macedonia Baptist Church
1515 in Jourdanton; the couple enjoyed 59 years together and became the
1616 parents of nine children, Edward, Theresa, Vanessa, Melanie,
1717 Remethia, Kevin, Jordan, Cathy Ann, and Marshall Devon; and
1818 WHEREAS, Mr. Winters drove trucks for Matthews Trucking
1919 Company before embarking on a career at Kelly Air Force Base that
2020 would span more than 30 years; and
2121 WHEREAS, This talented Texan joined his brother in a singing
2222 group called the Spiritual Five, and they became well-known
2323 throughout the state and beyond for their soul-inspiring
2424 performances; in 1962, he was ordained a deacon, and through the
2525 years he gave generously of his time to benefit a number of
2626 congregations in and around the Alamo City, including Greater Tree
2727 Mount Temple Baptist Church; and
2828 WHEREAS, Jordan Winters cherished his faith and the close
2929 relationships he shared with his loved ones, and he will forever
3030 hold a treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3232 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jordan Winters,
3333 Sr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to
3434 his wife, Evelyn; to his children, Jordan Winters, Jr., and his
3535 wife, Darcy, Edward Winters and his wife, Joyce, Theresa Thompson
3636 and her husband, Richard, Vanessa Fears and her husband, Robert,
3737 Melanie Brooks and her husband, Mike, Remethia Little and her
3838 husband, Harold, and Kevin Troy and his wife, Kathy; to his
3939 brothers, Albert Winters and his wife, Pat, Daniel Winters, Gilbert
4040 Winters, David Winters and his wife, Dorothy, and Timothy Winters
4141 and his wife, Betty; to his sisters, Janie Bennett and Celestine
4242 Winters; to his 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and to
4343 his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jordan
4747 Winters, Sr.
