5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Jordan Winters, Sr., of San Antonio on February 12, 2009, |

7 | 7 | | at the age of 82; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in the community of Wetmore on May 28, 1926, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Jordan Winters was the son of Albert and Louise Winters; as a young |
---|
10 | 10 | | man, he worked alongside his father as a sharecropper until 1944, |
---|
11 | 11 | | when he was drafted by the U.S. Marine Corps, and he served his |
---|
12 | 12 | | country with distinction through the end of World War II; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1949, he married the love of his life, Evelyn |
---|
14 | 14 | | Jackson, whom he had met while attending Macedonia Baptist Church |
---|
15 | 15 | | in Jourdanton; the couple enjoyed 59 years together and became the |
---|
16 | 16 | | parents of nine children, Edward, Theresa, Vanessa, Melanie, |
---|
17 | 17 | | Remethia, Kevin, Jordan, Cathy Ann, and Marshall Devon; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Winters drove trucks for Matthews Trucking |
---|
19 | 19 | | Company before embarking on a career at Kelly Air Force Base that |
---|
20 | 20 | | would span more than 30 years; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, This talented Texan joined his brother in a singing |
---|
22 | 22 | | group called the Spiritual Five, and they became well-known |
---|
23 | 23 | | throughout the state and beyond for their soul-inspiring |
---|
24 | 24 | | performances; in 1962, he was ordained a deacon, and through the |
---|
25 | 25 | | years he gave generously of his time to benefit a number of |
---|
26 | 26 | | congregations in and around the Alamo City, including Greater Tree |
---|
27 | 27 | | Mount Temple Baptist Church; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Jordan Winters cherished his faith and the close |
---|
29 | 29 | | relationships he shared with his loved ones, and he will forever |
---|
30 | 30 | | hold a treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jordan Winters, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Sr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to |

34 | 34 | | his wife, Evelyn; to his children, Jordan Winters, Jr., and his |

35 | 35 | | wife, Darcy, Edward Winters and his wife, Joyce, Theresa Thompson |
