55 WHEREAS, January 26, 2009, signals the beginning of the
66 Chinese New Year holiday season and marks a festive occasion for the
77 Chinese American community in Texas; and
88 WHEREAS, The most important celebration in the Chinese lunar
99 calendar, this 15-day observance is rooted in ancient tradition and
1010 originally paid tribute to the arrival of the spring season;
1111 through the ages, this period has also been considered a time of
1212 human rebirth, and many of the traditions associated with the
1313 holiday reflect the ideal of beginning the new year in a positive
1414 manner; and
1515 WHEREAS, In addition to bidding farewell to the previous year
1616 and welcoming in the new, Chinese New Year activities focus on the
1717 human connections that are the foundation of life; relatives and
1818 friends come together to show their appreciation for one another
1919 and to remember the ancestors who contributed to their family's
2020 good fortune; and
2121 WHEREAS, The spirit of giving thanks that underlies the
2222 Chinese New Year makes this holiday an appropriate time to
2323 recognize those residents who are of Chinese ancestry and to
2424 acknowledge the vital contributions they make to the cultural
2525 vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2727 Legislature hereby commemorate the Chinese New Year and extend to
2828 the members of the Chinese American community in Texas sincere best
2929 wishes for a memorable celebration.
