44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, April 12, 2009, marks the 68th wedding anniversary
66 of Edgar and Elizabeth Brown of Dallas, and this joyous event
77 provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on their memorable
88 journey together as husband and wife; and
99 WHEREAS, Their first date took place in September 1940, when
1010 William Edgar Brown, Jr., escorted the former Zuma Bell Elizabeth
1111 Way to the Texas State Fair; the pair had met in 1938, at the ice
1212 cream shop in Dallas where Miss Way was employed, and a similarity
1313 of experiences and aspirations would help to draw them close
1414 together; and
1515 WHEREAS, Born on October 8, 1920, in Irving and raised in the
1616 farming community of Estelle, Mr. Brown developed an appreciation
1717 for education as a young boy and graduated at the age of 15 from
1818 Irving High School, having never missed a day of school; he went on
1919 to attend what was then North Texas Agricultural College, where he
2020 studied electrical engineering; and
2121 WHEREAS, A native of Grayson County, Elizabeth Way was born
2222 on July 21, 1922, and she grew up, like Mr. Brown, in a large family
2323 that was engaged in agriculture; she attended high school in
2424 Colbert, Oklahoma, during which time she played on a girls' ball
2525 team, and she later moved with her family to Dallas; and
2626 WHEREAS, Just before Christmas 1940, Mr. Brown proposed to
2727 his sweetheart, and the couple were married in Dallas on April 12,
2828 1941, in the home of the preacher of Hampton Place Church of Christ;
2929 after the United States entered World War II, Edgar Brown
3030 volunteered for duty with the U.S. Navy, and he worked in the area
3131 of radio technology and electronics until his discharge in 1946;
3232 following Mr. Brown's return to civilian life, he and Mrs. Brown
3333 moved to Dallas, where they raised their three beloved children,
3434 Kaye, Gail, and Bill, and established a successful sound-equipment
3535 business; and
3636 WHEREAS, Sustained and inspired by their deep faith, the
3737 Browns are valued members of Cockrell Hill Church of Christ in
3838 Dallas; their lives continue to be enriched as well by their
3939 close-knit family, which now includes four grandchildren and five
4040 great-grandchildren; and
4141 WHEREAS, The 68 years of marriage that Mr. and Mrs. Brown have
4242 shared is eloquent affirmation of the meaning of love and
4343 commitment, and their enduring union is an inspiration to all who
4444 know them; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4646 Legislature hereby congratulate Edgar and Elizabeth Brown on the
4747 occasion of their 68th wedding anniversary and extend to them
4848 sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Brown as an expression of high regard by
5151 the Texas House of Representatives.
