55 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sense of loss
66 felt by the family and friends of U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Ward of
77 Killeen, who died on February 9, 2009, at the age of 30; and
88 WHEREAS, Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment,
99 3rd Heavy "Greywolf" Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division out
1010 of Fort Hood, Sergeant Ward was killed in Mosul, Iraq, when his
1111 vehicle was struck by an explosive device; and
1212 WHEREAS, Joshua Allen Ward, Sr., was born on October 23,
1313 1978, to John M. Ward, Sr., and Patricia Irene Lyles Ward; he was a
1414 1997 graduate of Needville High School, where he was a star football
1515 player; and
1616 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty after the
1717 attacks of 9/11, Mr. Ward enlisted in the army in 2001 and trained
1818 at Fort Knox, Kentucky; he was serving his third deployment in Iraq
1919 at the time of his death; and
2020 WHEREAS, Sergeant Ward was a courageous and highly decorated
2121 soldier who received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, three Army
2222 Commendation Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, and the National
2323 Defense Service Medal, among others; and
2424 WHEREAS, Through his unfaltering devotion to duty, honor, and
2525 country, Joshua Ward upheld the highest ideals of the United States
2626 armed forces, and his fellow citizens owe him a debt of gratitude
2727 that the passage of time can never diminish; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2929 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Joshua Allen
3030 Ward, Sr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family:
3131 to his sons, Joshua Allen Ward, Jr., and Zane Tyler Ward; to his
3232 parents, John M. Ward, Sr., and Patricia Irene Lyles Ward; to his
3333 brothers, Benjamin Wayne Ward, Eric Johnathon Ward, and Johnny
3434 M. Ward, Jr.; to his sister, Brandi Elaine Claire Ward; to his
3535 fiance, Deonna Julia Gunderson; to his sons' mother, Misty Dawn
3636 Calvert Ward; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it

3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4040 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joshua
4141 Ward.
