| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional |

| 6 | 6 | | Women held its annual fellowship breakfast on October 21, 2007, |

| 7 | 7 | | commemorating the organization's 65-year history and honoring |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | L. Vernice Warner as the chapter's Woman of the Year; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Created to support and celebrate women in their |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | respective fields, the Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Women has also promoted community service projects and a long list |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of local organizations and events since its founding in 1942; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Woman of the Year L. Vernice Warner embodies the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | group's charitable ideals through her many efforts to give back to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the community by helping others; in addition to her work with the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Bowden Chapter, she has been a valued member of Emmanuel A.M.E. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Church for more than 60 years, and the congregation has greatly |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | benefited from her service as a trustee, steward, Sunday school |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | teacher, women's day chair, and lay delegate to several |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Quadrangles; she has also attended the general conferences hosted |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | by her church and shared her time with the Women's Missionary |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Society, which she serves as a life member; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A native of Weimar, Mrs. Warner graduated from |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Douglas High School and attended St. Philip's College; while |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | studying at St. Philip's, she met Artemisia Bowden, who served as |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | her mentor and helped her earn a scholarship to the St. Agnes |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Hospital School of Nursing at St. Augustine's College; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, This accomplished Texan went on to earn bachelor's |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and master's degrees in education from Prairie View A&M University |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and pursued further studies at Our Lady of the Lake University; |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | today, she is retired from a distinguished 33-year career with the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | San Antonio Independent School District and enjoys a lifetime |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | membership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In recognizing the achievements of Mrs. Warner, |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | members of the Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional Women |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | honored a woman who has devoted many years to improving the lives of |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Alamo City residents, and this notable organization and its Woman |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | of the Year are truly deserving of special commendation; now, |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | therefore, be it |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby honor the Bowden Chapter of Business and |

| 42 | 42 | | Professional Women for its members' 65 years of community service |

| 43 | 43 | | and congratulate L. Vernice Warner on being named the chapter's |
